COVID-19 UPDATES AND RESOURCES
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
In response to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) is actively working on strategies to assist fire departments across the state. Ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of firefighters, their families, and the public is our top priority during this disaster.
We recognize that COVID-19 has the potential to impact the entire state and may significantly impact the day-to-day operations of fire departments. Below is a summary of the work currently underway by the MSFCA.
GOV WALZ LAUNCHES HOME-MADE MASK DRIVE
The Minnesota fire service is trusted and known to step up during emergencies. Of course, we see this happening right now during the current COVID-19 outbreak.
On April 17, Gov. Tim Walz asked the fire service to help battle COVID-19 in their communities by allowing residents to drop off homemade cloth face masks at fire stations statewide on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Prior to this event, you may want to take the following steps:
- Connect with your local emergency manager
- Connect with local public health
- Contact congregate care facilities
- Determine need for masks at facilities
- Coordinate how and when masks will be distributed to care facilities

Your local emergency manager has been informed of this effort and is available to help. The emergency manager is likely already working with congregate care facilities and can work as a conduit to these facilities. The emergency manager will also be the contact in case your community doesn’t have congregate care facilities, or you receive an abundance of masks.

MSFDA MISSION STATEMENT
The Minnesota State Fire Department Association will initiate and maintain an active participation in all aspects of the fire service including training, education, fire prevention, scholarships, law and legislative action, service and special awards, and benefits for its members.
The MSFDA represents ALL of the fire departments and firefighters in Minnesota. When a department becomes a member, all of their members are represented. MSFDA was organized in 1873 and we feel that the need for a strong voice for the firefighters of Minnesota is as critical today and in the future, as it was then.
Firefighter issues are front and center at the Minnesota Legislature through MSFDA’s participation with a legislative lobbyist. We also are active participants in the Minnesota Fire Association Coalition (MnFAC) as well as Minnesota Fire Service Joint Council. Our board members actively seek membership participation in this process, looking for issues to present to our state legislators. The result has been groundbreaking legislation for firefighters and protection for the citizens we serve.
We are member-driven, and could not continue to carry on the work that benefits all firefighters without your continued support.
Each year following our June conference, a Red Book is printed featuring that year's conference proceedings including honorary member inductees and the current MSFDA bylaws.
