NVFC Monthly Chairman's Report - October 2005

Dear NVFC Directors and Alternates:

Please find below a short report of recent NVFC activities.  I will
provide these to you on a monthly basis and encourage you to share these
with your Board within your state.

RELIEF EFFORTS
	At least three times each week, the office staff and/or I
participated in conference calls with the US Fire Administration's
coordination of donated equipment.  The staff has been very busy cutting
checks to volunteer firefighters in need in the affected states.

Oct. 1	Shawn Stokes gave a Fire Corps presentation to the Alaska State
Firefighters Association.

Oct. 3	Heather Schafer had a meeting with First Alert regarding their
2006 membership level.  First Alert signed on as the sponsor of the NVFC
Fire Prevention of the Year Award.

Oct. 4	Heather Schafer had a meeting with MSA regarding AFG grants.

Oct. 6	Heather Schafer and Lynne Lipin participated in the Executive
Committee conference call.  The minutes from the call are posted in the
Board member area of the website.

Oct. 9	TJ Nedrow attended the ITS America meeting in Washington, DC.

Oct. 10 	David Finger's first day.  He is the new Director of
Government Affairs.  dfinger at nvfc.org or 202/887-5700, ext. 12.

Oct. 11	Heather Schafer and David Finger attended CFSI's
Fireside Chat.  Several legislative initiatives were discussed including
the fire safe cigarette and the volunteer job protection act.

Oct. 13	Heather Schafer and I attended the FAMA/FEMSA meeting in
San Antonio, Texas.  The meeting provided an opportunity to network with
existing and potential corporate members.

Oct. 14	Shawn Stokes attended a USA Freedom Corps briefing on
Katrina efforts. Briefings were given by Secretary Chertoff (DHS),
Secretary Card (WH Chief of Staff), Secretary Jackson (HUD), and others.


David Finger met with Sean Carroll from CFSI and Steve Austin from IAAI
to discuss legislative issues, in particular finding a Senate sponsor
and co-sponsor for the Volunteer Firefighter and EMS Personnel Job
Protection Act.

David Finger met with Diane Collins from Curt Weldon's office, Rich
Thomas from Bill Pascrell's office, and Kara Haas from the House
Science Committee to discuss legislative issues.

Oct. 19	NVFC Fall meeting October 19-22.

Oct. 24	Shawn Stokes had a meeting with the Matrix Group to
review design changes to the Fire Corps website. 

Oct. 26	Jim Monihan, Heather Schafer and David Finger attended
the CFSI National Advisory Committee Meeting.  NVFC and IAFC presented a
resolution that was adopted unanimously calling on Congress to pass H.R.
3949, the Volunteer Firefighter and EMS Personnel Job Protection Act. 
After the NAC meeting, Heather, Dave, and Jim met with Ken Lasala,
Director of Government Relations from IAFC, to discuss other ways that
NVFC and IAFC can work together to accomplish common goals.

Oct. 28	Maggie Wilson, Lynne Lipin, and Brooke Marshall attended
the CFSI Fire Training Day held at the Maryland Fire and Rescue
Institute at the University of Maryland. 

Oct. 31	Heather Schafer had a meeting with Gretchen Zuber from
MSA to discuss a new fundraising tool that MSA will offer to the
volunteer fire service.
